  2. GopherPup is an Internet information client program, usable
  3. on the common computer systems including Macintosh, Motif/X-
  4. Windows and MS-Windows[+].  It provides an easy to use,
  5. Macintosh Finder-like link to the range of Internet Gopher
  6. services.

  8. This program supports Gopher+ methods, including ASK forms
  9. that make it possible to provide client-server dialogs for
  10. various information analyses, and supports multiple view
  11. formats, so that you can fetch versions of documents that
  12. most suit your computer system.
  13.  
  14. GopherPup is available at
  15. ftp.bio.indiana.edu:/util/gopher/gopherpup.

  17. GopherPup is based directly on my earlier GopherApp program
  18. for Macintosh computers.  It includes, or will include, the
  19. same feature set and general user interface.
  20.  
  21. It is built on top of a cross-platform toolkit, written in
  22. ANSI C, from the National Center for Biotechnology
  23. Information (NCBI), especially Jonathan Kans' Vibrant user-
  24. interface toolkit, which works on Macintosh, MS-Windows and
  25. X/Motif (Unix and VMS) systems.

  27. On the NCBI toolkit I built a C++ application framework that
  28. is patterned after the MacApp framework from Apple Computer.
  29. This application framework, called Don's Class Application
  30. Library (DCLAP), will be available freely to the public, as
  31. is NCBI's toolkit, for those wishing to use it for
  32. development of platform independent applications.  The home
  33. archive location for DCLAP is {ftp,gopher} to
  34. ftp.bio.indiana.edu:/util/dclap.

  37. This initial release of GopherPup lacks several important
  38. features, and also it includes many bugs, making it likely
  39. to crash, and not yet suitable for extensive use.

  41. -- Macintosh requirements:  requires MacTCP from Apple
  42. Computer.  The current release may not work at all on older
  43. macs (SE).
  44.  
  45. -- MS-Windows requirements:  not available yet.
  46.  
  47. -- X/Motif requirements:  the author will only be able to
  48. supply binaries for a limited number of Unix OS flavors.
  49. These are
  50.     SunOS-Sparc-Motif, now available, your system will need
  51. to supply Motif runtime shared libraries, and
  52.     SGI-Irix-MIPS-Motif, not yet ready.

  54. Source code will eventually be available to those who wish
  55. to compile on their own systems.
